STRUGGLE - (Part-11)

“After he brings back Ahmad… we will rest from him for a while”

Nasir didn’t reply. A sort of guilt had made its way into his heart…. Ahmad had stood up to cover on him

“He didn’t have to say that!” He said after some time

“Well! That’s the way Ahmad is, he can never stand around when someone is being oppressed, it just isn’t his habit”

“I could have taken care of myself”

“That’s what you don’t know, Nasir. With that guy, you CAN’T take care of yourself. He discovers the phobias of prisoners and uses it against them…. He can fall to any level… literally any…”

Nasir sat looking at Abdul Kareem… how beautiful he seemed… how so wonderful in spite of all that he had suffered

“Ahmad has this great character of speaking out the truth without hesitation…. He is clear and sound about his opinions, some times a little too much”

Yasser laughed out

Nasir was taken by a bit of surprise, Yasser wasn’t used to laughing like that

“You know Nasir, when Abdul Kareem had first met Kim, he had spat in his face too”

Nasir grinned.

“Really? How did he respond?”

“He has grown more fiendish now, at that time he had got angry and beat Abdul Kareem up”

Yasser started laughing again.

“Ahmad will be alright, Yasser, wont he? “ Nasir asked looking at Ahmad’s empty cell

There came no response except laughter

Nasir raised his hand touching the bars, a little confused

“Yasser!” He whispered realizing, that Yasser was not laughing… he was crying…

It was the fourth time his head and upper body was being submerged in the water. He had tired to hold his breath in the beginning but eventually failed…

Kim was bent on killing him; at least, he felt so.

All that he could do was pray to Allah within himself… that if he would live then let the torture end fast… and if he was dying, them let death come fast

O Lord! Build for me a house in Paradise!

Suddenly his head was released and he felt being thrown harshly against the floor

Kim dug his boot in Ahmad’s ribs
Ahmad didn’t scream, still coughing out water…. He had already been beaten violently for the torn shirt on his body was half drenched in water and half with blood

He was lying on his side… almost unconscious

“That’s enough Kim… we have to go for Christmas shopping!”

Kim was pressing down the sole of his shoes on Ahmad’s cheek, “Now remember the new rule, boy

-Protesting is forbidden!”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes that’s it… only okay”

“Same here!”

Ahmad and Abdul Kareem laughed silently

“They both are asleep?”

“Yes they didn’t sleep for the last two night… very concerned for us…eh? And we just love to drag ourselves into problems”

“I am not like you”, Ahmad complained to the air

“Ahmad, I am not that bad and all! Huh!”

“May I Ask… Omar?”

Abdul Kareem laughed, “Let us get better then we can share all that stuff… you can wait… cant you?”

“Yes… May I sleep now too?”

“Sure you may, inshaAllah, I think I will sleep too… though I am hungry”

No response, Ahmad had fallen unconscious

Abdul Kareem grinned… after such a long time back in our places again… with out any curtains between us… feels good… very good

The picture of a woman crossed his mind as he fell drifted to sleep

“The big day!” she declared to the world standing in the balcony
She placed her hand over her heart, it was beating a little faster. She laughed out and ran for a shower

When she came out wearing the bathrobe the sun was close to setting

“God! I have to hurry!” She felt excitement tickling her

After dressing up she stood in front of the full-length mirror doing her hair. She foolishly recalled that what she had said must have been “The big evening” and not “the big day”. She had wasted all afternoon in reading a useless book to kill time. Never had she ever thought of attending a party like that

She blew air in whistles frequently to let herself calm a little

There was no need to be very extravagant in the make up. She thought opening the makeup box. A little pink on the cheeks… no no, she took a tissue and wiped her cheeks, the shinning on the lips… yes and a little glitter powder would do… no need for the gloss or the liner… and that went on for an hour or so… the sun had set… and its redness was disappearing in the horizon

Cindy didn’t look even once back as she had put on her full-length fur overcoat and cap… afraid to find something wrong like she had done for the whole previous hour

The ruby set of the throat-fitting necklace and earring glittered on her. Never to forget the red purse that she had purchased specially for the suit, which twinkled at every angle, she sat in the taxi, a little hesitant

This night should be memorable and perfect… she thought

‘Just like you!’ Ivan would have pointed out

After the church sermon and prayers, attendants, all from the very rich class with silks and satin, gold and stones, gowns and coats had come in to the grand hall it was time for dinner and the food was about to be set

White lights with blinding voltage were starring down at the visitors who stood greeting each other talking about all odds from dress and feather to the tiresome business of unending problems

“Come here!” Emma caught her hand and pulled her into the hall

Cindy shut her eyes for some time unable to adjust with the bright lights

“Open your eyes, you fool!”

Cindy opened her eyes slowly, then let them stay open for a while. She had never seen a gathering like that in her life

“… and all these people form the 1st class” Cindy made an uncertain face, “I am scarred Emma”

“Now shut up, you will never get a chance like this all your life!”

“Yeah” Cindy swallowed. Her eyebrows furrowed in a nervous gesture.

“Feel at home! Come on, you must behave important to distract peoples attention and gosh! How lovely you are looking… any one will come after you, be confident!”

I can be confident if I know someone here but everyone is a stranger to me, Cindy thought.

“Lets take a drink,” Emma was catching her arm and pulling her again

“I will walk okay, don’t pull me”

“Remove your cap, woman”, Emma said when they had reached a table

Cindy removed her cap and put it in her purse. It looked a bit stuffed with the cap in it, but there was no other place. Cindy pressed her purse to make it thin again. No use, she raised an eyebrow

Again, taking the drink she looked about nervously… all strangers

She had had her hair at the back of her head in a bun, pinned carefully not to bulge. Strings of her hair hung down her cheeks in wavy locks

O god! Let me find someone to talk to, she thought

Emma caught her hand

“Come lets talk to them, they are my friends”

Cindy sighed, what was she going to do with them…

“That’s such a raw music”, Kim burst out suddenly

“I like classic”, Victor said with a touch of artistic taste in his voice

“Its alright”, John said looking here-n-there

Some men caught his look and he went over.

Exchange of greetings and some formal talk ensued

Ivan sighed looking at Billy who was hunting about for the most beautiful woman

“Will you stop, that” he said finally

“Dancing will start after a few hours I must have the best one chosen already”

“Your girl didn’t come or what?”

“My girl or girls?” Billy laughed aloud

Ivan drank slowly trying to amuse himself, he had been to thousands of such parties and nothing distinguished this one from the rest.

Bill found a woman soon and moved away with her. Kim was talking to some women too. Victor stood by his side

“Nancy said she would come” he was obviously bent on finding his girl.

“I will keep the glass Victor, just move aside…”
Ivan pushed victor slightly away and placed a the glass on the table.

“Hey Ivan, Ivan”, Ivan almost fell recognizing a feminine voice.

He stood erect and relayed the place only to find what Billy failed to… the most beautiful woman in the hall.

“Gosh!” he gasped seeing her. Victor looked as well. Cindy was extraordinarily amazing.

“Excuse me” Ivan said, moving past his man and going, without letting his gaze stir, to where Cindy stood.

“Merry Christmas Ivan!” Cindy smiled in her gentle manner.

“Mer…Merr…Merry Christmas …Miss Bretta!”
“Come on now! If I call you Ivan you must say Cindy as well, shouldn’t you?”

Ivan was starring at her, lost. He nodded slowly “… Y…Yes!”

“Are you nervous about something?”

“N..No…!”

Cindy touched her cheek.

“My God Ivan, I can feel myself so hot…its such a grand party and I have never been to such places…goodness…I feel so jumpy…!”

“There is nothing to be nervous about …you were pretty confident I met you last Easter!”
Cindy whistled under her breath

“Its just not the same…”

“Idiot!” Victor said to himself, “John’s going to get mad at him!”

Victor felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned.

“Is that boy gone nuts? John will bury him tonight if he sets his eyes on them together!” Billy whispered in his ear.

“Where is Ivan?! John came to the two!”

Victor stepped on Bill’s leg.

‘Sorry…! Yes… he just walked off somewhere... May be seeing someone … I mean..”

“Hey John! What’s Ivy doing with your girl?” Kim neared the group

“My girl?” John looked askance at him

Bill cleared his throat

“Kim you hair… hair!” he pointed out

“Hair?” Kim touched his hair

“Yeah hair!” Bill made a face and scratched his head with a finger.

“Shut up Billy!” John commanded
“Where is Cindy?!”

“That side, with Ivan. I didn’t know she was coming, huh!”

“Nor did I! John replied glancing at Victor and Billy angrily.
They turned away.

After a word from the host the dinner was set. Cindy felt a little composed after gaining the company of an experienced young and handsome man like Ivan

Ivan placed his plate on the table and wiped his lips with a kerchief

Cindy was looking at him for a while, then suddenly, she laughed.

He turned towards her, “What happened?”

“Did you let your beard grow on purpose or did you forget to shave?”

“Does it look bad?”

“Oh no, not at all, you look very nice, I just thought it looked like somebody else”

“Nasir, for example…”

Cindy blushed, “Maybe…”

“I wanted to look a bit different this Christmas eve and I sort of liked the way those guys wear their beards… it looks very tidy”

“Our thoughts are very similar Ivan” Cindy smiled.

Ivan felt a little uneasy. Cindy mustn’t have been so beautiful

And that was all when she was still wearing the fur coat… he couldn’t wait for the dance to begin

“Merry Christmas Cindy!”
Ivan’s heart skipped a beat

“Merry Christmas John! Cindy turned to him.

“Having a nice time?” He asked

“Not really but Ivan has been a great company I don’t know what would I have done if he wasn’t here!”

“Yes Ivan can be a very amusing person”, John complimented but the bitterness enclosed within that sentence was tearing Ivan’s heart apart.

“Excuse me I want to wash my hands”
“Sure” Cindy smiled again.

Ivan felt weak. He looked at John who nodded in reply.

He walked over to Victor.
Victor excused his friend, seeing him come.

“What happened?” he asked anxiously.
Ivan shook his head

Then starring out of the window, he felt his lips twist like Kim’s.

“Victor! Dreams are beautiful, right?”

“Victor didn’t reply for a while, starring dumbly at Ivan who stood watching John and Cindy.

“Yes”

The smile broadened

“So is Cindy”

The women had gone upstairs to come down in gowns for the dancing. A shade of black was visible form top as men ready for the women stood eagerly for the music to begin. Elders had taken sides for the young couples to play their tunes in their own way, in their own words

Slowly, one after one, moments ticked by, eyes were fixed on the stairs top, then a voice was heard and they started coming down in their exotic and extravagant gowns. Man each for his woman stood at the stairs foot.

John waited.

Cindy sat at her place almost decided that she wouldn’t go. Her feet were shivering what if she fell what if she no more danced the way she did before?
Every one would laugh

Suddenly she found herself alone in the room. Others already gone.

“Come Cindy’ Emma called she was wearing a blur gown with lots of designs on the shoulders and neck.

“I don’t know” Cindy stood up hesitating.

“I will push you down the stairs if you don’t” Emma caught her hand and pulled

“Alright go, I am coming”
Cindy snatched her hand and stood firmly

Emma looking uncertainly at her went out

I must be confident, she said to herself

“And you are a nice woman…”
“Nasir” she said. A smiling expression taking over her nervous one

“A crazy terrorist” she thought, its meaning almost changed for her now

John held Kim by the collar nearly knocking him down

“She… she… can’t be human”

Kim turned and looked at Cindy coming down the stairs. She was wearing a maroon gown with white netted designs stitched onto it. Her skin and the white not differing much… she had a redness on her face. There was almost no make up except for the darkened eyes and the shining lips

“Let me go” John said pushing Kim aside and reaching the stair foot just in time to hold her hand before others stepped up

“Honor me, Cindy”
Cindy looked at him and smiled pleasantly

“Sure”

The music began. Many uncoupled men stood watching, commenting, laughing, waiting to get a turn. Ivan stood amongst them but he was starring at just one couple, envying the man who had so feelinglessly taken his place.

“Cindy you are coolness to the eyes” John said to her

Did he see her smile? she turned moving round as she danced

Some other men approached Cindy courteously. Obviously, John couldn’t refuse. They had already danced for a long time now.

Time ticked by Ivan got the chance of holding Cindy’s hand just once, and that was enough for him. She had praised him and the feeling of having her by his side was refusing to leave. Why had she to be John’s?

Feet moved tirelessly and the dance continued…until not more that few couples danced amongst them Cindy and John

“I am tired now” Cindy said

“It’s okay lets take a break” And they moved out of the scene.
John sat and drank a little.
Cindy disappeared from sight.

Realizing that, John walked out looking for her.

She was going to where others had gone near the water compound.

“Cindy” he called.

She turned “What?”

“I want to talk to you”

“I haven’t forgiven you if that’s what you are asking”

“It’s something else”

“Alright, lets go out and talk”

“As you wish!”

They walked together, only their steps echoing in the corridor.

“Christmas is the day of forgiving people” John said.

“Yes”

“So you should forgive me”

“Alright. Then, what else…”

John stopped walking. Cindy went a few steps further, and then turned.

“What do y…?” she stopped halfway, words caught in her throat looking at the ring that was stretched out to her.

“Give me your hand Cindy, I want to be your fiancé, I want you to be mine…forever”

“No John! Not now!”

“But you will agree… Wont you?”

They silently looked at each other’s face for some time.

“I will try John… I will try my best!” She said finally and briskly walked out

“And I will see to it, that you do!” John smiled lovingly at the ring and put it back in his pocket.

She came out directly to where Ivan was standing near the water.

“Ivan!” she exclaimed.

He turned with delight at her voice

“What are you doing?”

“Making a wish!”

“Wish?” she laughed.

“Yeah! According to tradition in India, if you make a wish and light a candle, letting it drift in the water, they say, the wish comes true! I read that in a book”

“Really! Maybe I should try it too”

“Let me help you!”

Ivan showed her how to do it. Both of them laughed at the superstition they did not believe in, yet did it just for the sake of fun. He held her as she put down the candle placed in a tiny saucer in to the water

They stood back watching it drift alone side Ivan’s.

They were alarmed when a gunshot blew out Ivan’s candle

“Sorry! I didn’t mean to”

They turned and looked at John standing at a distance, a revolver dancing in his finger.

“Ivan, we have to leave now. Are you coming?!”

“Yes sir”, a terror had cropped up inside him.

“Are you angry John?” Cindy said turning to the waters.

“No! Why should I dear? I was searching for my mates and know they will come after hearing the shot

“I am not a baby John”

“I know that is why I am not lying to you”

“Good evening Cindy”

“Yeah bye…bye Ivan”

Ivan stood still terrified starring at John

John put the revolver in his pocket and gestured Ivan to come with his forefinger… looking down at him.

“Bye!” Ivan whispered as John turned and went. “We will meet again?” he asked uncertainly. Cindy looked at him and smiled “Sure”

Then Ivan went after John

Cindy stood watching the candle. She had wished for Nasir to be hers... She has wished that he would become a Christian… otherwise, she would not marry him… not on any account.
